Givers Gain

I was thinking about this last night before I fell asleep.

Although this might sound counter-intuitive to a significant part of our society, giving is the path to greater blessing.  It is a foundational spiritual principle, a “law of the universe” put into play since time began, and it is part of the “upside down” kingdom we can be a part of.

In our current economic state – with the US financial rating downgraded, stocks plummeting down a virtual greased slide of heightened risk, and our leaders talking again about raising taxes (where else can they find money except from us?), if we focus on the news, it’s a feast filled with depression.

But there’s a place with a brighter light, and I want to focus there today.

Amidst all of the selfishness we see in our world, there are many points of light. And these lights will become brighter and brighter as the economic picture gets darker.

Who are they and what do they say?

You’ll find a common thread in the following “taglines” you may be familiar with.

Givers Gain. That’s the theme of the Business Networking Int’l group – a meeting of professionals who get to know, like, and trust one another so that they can refer with confidence to those who have specific needs.  I am a part of a great local BNI group, the Hill City Founders, and if someone I knew needed an awesome mortgage broker, realtor, graphics design artist, photographer, and many more experts in their particular field, I would point them in the direction of my colleagues with the utmost of confidence.

Go-Givers. This is a book that a new-found friend gave me at an Internet marketing conference back in 2009.  Written by Bob Burg, this short, power-packed story of transformation from the power of giving is sure to have an impact on your life. I highly recommend you get a copy and read it this week!

“Give and it will be given to you.” This is an ancient scripture text, and most people have probably heard of it.  But many may be unfamiliar with the description that follows this brief quote.

“Give, and it will be given to you; pressed down, shaken together and running over, will men give into your lap. For with the same measure you give, it will be given to you in return.”

Luke 6: 38 (paraphrase)

Then  I thought of the many groups in our communities all over the world who “give for a living”.     Our local Rotary Clubs, churches, soup kitchens, Salvation Army stations, food pantries, volunteer firefighters and many more define their mission as giving.  There are also many professionals who donate a portion of their services to those less fortunate.

There is giving of physical products, spiritual insight, emotional encouragement, educational know-how and even the giving of beauty – such as we feel when viewing a beautiful painting or listening to an inspirational song.

As tough as things get sometimes, we can be so grateful that there are people all around us who are willing to help.  Sometimes all that is needed is for us to stretch out our hand to graciously receive what they have to give.

Just remember – you may have a need today, but in the future you will be able to give to those in less fortunate circumstances than you find yourself. And so it goes.

If you have the means to give in any area, don’t put it off.

Giving blesses both the giver and the receiver.

Be a go-giver to someone in your world today.

“We are all brothers and sisters in this world, if we don’t take care of each other – who will?”

Everyone helps another, who helps another. It’s time to pay it forward, world.
